Because the entire world operates on the fact that we issue identities for real persons for various practical purposes? Passports, drivers licenses, taxes, school, etc. Makes it easy to assure that any services are not Sybil attacked.

Connection & story. In certain markets, knowing who you're interacting with and The Why behind it can carry a premium.

Bots are a real problem for apps that want to be authentic (like WC) and proof of humanity is a stated solution. I don’t think the space has realized how hard the edge cases are to police. Will be interesting to see if World can solve for them. Or maybe the meme/brand is just strong enough that it doesn’t matter.

mechanically, it's critical to systems like quadratic funding where there's a direct dependency on bona fide personal preference. also, there's kind of stated preference: credible social activity should be valuable as it ostensibly sets the "shelf space" by which content creators gain impressions. no proof of human, no worthwhile competition with jimmy kimmel's trending page or any other illegitimate market of ideas.

Because we live in a world where we’re discussing “proof of gender” in sports and for bathrooms There’s a long way to “proof of human who cares”

Fair distribution, at least from the issuer’s side. It’s on the human to be responsible for not losing or selling their proof.
