Because the entire world operates on the fact that we issue identities for real persons for various practical purposes? Passports, drivers licenses, taxes, school, etc. Makes it easy to assure that any services are not Sybil attacked.

Connection & story. In certain markets, knowing who you're interacting with and The Why behind it can carry a premium.

Bots are a real problem for apps that want to be authentic (like WC) and proof of humanity is a stated solution. I donโ€™t think the space has realized how hard the edge cases are to police. Will be interesting to see if World can solve for them. Or maybe the meme/brand is just strong enough that it doesnโ€™t matter.

mechanically, it's critical to systems like quadratic funding where there's a direct dependency on bona fide personal preference. also, there's kind of stated preference: credible social activity should be valuable as it ostensibly sets the "shelf space" by which content creators gain impressions. no proof of human, no worthwhile competition with jimmy kimmel's trending page or any other illegitimate market of ideas.

I thought it was useful back in the day, with humanetics.super.site I don't believe its a worthy goal to pursue now; any reputation system is prone to being gamed, including being human We're also likely to instruct agents to act on our behalf, and porting humaness reputation to an agent sort of defeats any anticipated benefit (as 1 call center worker in country x could control millions of human anchored agents) I think its more important to establish cryptoeconomic systems that trend/tend towards a desired system outcome

Dead-Internet Theory. I can only imagine as AI tools become more powerful and accessible to the average user more spam and sybil botnets will continue to exist. It wonโ€™t just be finding out if your KOL is using a botnet but finding a needle in the haystack of who isnโ€™t. They will be weaponized. (in theory)
