Recruiting AMA! I was (and am) a tech recruiter for 4 years. I’ve scaled a company from 7-35 in a year and hired every founding functional role in a seed stage startup. :)

There's no silver bullet question for having a good hire, but in general I ask everyone: - What is the biggest mistake you've ever made in? = copout answer means they're high ego, honest answer is low ego. - Teach me the most difficult concept you know in 5 min They should meet the team and get along with everyone :)

Everyone else is answering with technical questions, but I believe that it’s much more difficult to screen for a good culture fit than a technical fit 🤷🏻 When you hire a ft founding engineer they’re all smart, opinionated, and have yoe - you have to know they’ll stick with you for the long run!

- How do you gain technical consensus w/ other engineers? - What’s the most technically complex project you’ve worked on? Followed with: What did you learn and what would you do differently?

For us it wasn’t so much a magic question but was a mix of 1) the dev’s ability to talk through the problem solving process 2) technical correctness and 3) unanimous gut thumbs up from the interviewing team
