All those people were operating under the assumption that he wouldn't use it to influence an election and secure himself a position of influence in the new administration so he can steer policy to be more favorable to him. Were it not for how the election turned out, the purchase would still be considered a bad investment.

Elon is smart and formidable which means you can member bet against him. But he definitely overpaid a lot for the “business” that was Twitter. He’s gotten the value out of it now, but again not bc of the business of Twitter.
