On token-gating I think it's conflating a tool for an outcome. People want to create vibrant and thriving community. Does token-gating enable that? Potentially, given the right product / UX and user base.

The Dan-Gate worked brilliantly for stoking the embers of a thriving community Maybe a token could be used in a similar way, in certain cases

It only works if the goal is to be exclusionary. This is fine for some things (luxury goods, unlocking patron/club extras, proof of attendance etc) but it should never be a brand’s sole channel or they’ve effectively locked out growth

it's one of the simplest tools for flexibly allowing hosts to control quality in channels & also opens some financial incentives for hosts to grow channels.

it helps to start with like-minded contributors, enables different tiers based on token holding (not only erc20 or nfts, but any onchain/offchain activity) and the culture within the community naturally evolves and strengthens over time

One of the best communities I had been part of was Lenny’s Slack Community accessible to only paid subscribers. We can probably consider it as some form of token gating. And it worked out well because folks who absolutely loved Lenny’s posts signed up and actively participated in the conversations on slack

We need a better name in the ecosystem. Token-gating isn't it. With more happening onchain, thinking beyond just a few owned NFTs, it's more about future benefit based on genuine attestations. Something more like Access Keys or Credential Gateway.

My $ 0.02 is that hard gates are the worst kind of token gates. What you probably want is a soft gate — personalized experiences based on your wallet. "Everyone can get in and do A, but only people holding X can do B."

Imagine if Mr. Beast token gated early on. Would he have grown to the size he’s grown? No token gating + monetizing the audience after they’ve opted in > charging fans to be ur fans

token gating is for when you have a vibrant community and want to set up tiers of engagement token gating to build a community is riding an exclusivity wave and likely disappointing when the exclusive product/experience isnt as hype as the entry restriction

Sometime in the future... WorldId gating would be cool. Once a spammer, always a spammer.

Have you seen token-gating with a recurring subscription? You get a monthly (or weekly) push notification requesting that you sign in your wallet.

Would love: -- token gated channels for DAOs -- BUT with option to override/manually add -- and allow for anyone to read but members to cast Would be helpful especially for those who want to make sure members can have their casts seen regardless of power badge etc.

so much to unpack here with 4yrs of data and 53k+ tokenized communities later - I say it is a bit nuanced

Early BAYC community had a great token gated experience, it created scarcity of experiences and drove buying pressure to get in. Unfortunately it changed as early people sold, and those wanting in the token gated experience viewed it as a cross selling opportunity
