Why don't you clean up "the bots"? Useful to be precise here: "bots" is a catch all term that people use to describe low effort, uninteresting or otherwise off-topic content. However, a "bot" is traditionally thought of as a programmatic account, i.e. controlled by a script or software. e.g. bot net When people on Farcaster refer to "bots" they are more often referring to actual people using a mobile device (with the aid of translation tools and ChatGPT) who post uninteresting content (from their pov). They are casting and replying in hopes of appearing to be a "real account" because they have learned that turns into a future economic reward in crypto. Recent tipping meta has increased the expected value of these accounts. It's possible to algorithmically label these accounts, but then you create a "shadowban" meta. So you massively increase the number of support messages and complaints. This was the state of the world before priority mode.

We're going to keep iterating here, but our pov is: 1. Priority mode works pretty well out of the box 2. We need to offer ways for actual interesting accounts to break through 3. We'll likely bring back some version of spam labeling since priority mode has created it's own set of customer support complaints. "Why don't you just use onchain signals?" a. Based on our waitlist last year of 300K sign ups, "bots" have plenty of Ethereum addresses with assets. b. Most new users don't want to connect an address during sign up (friction, doesn't work well on mobile). So you'll miss out of on good accounts. c. Active onchain presence != you regularly post interesting content. There are some people of course, but plenty of examples otherwise.

hey @dwr.eth i had an idea yesterday that you might find useful the current options are basically two-fold priority mode on, only follows and power badges trigger notifications priority mode off, everything triggers notifications what if there were a third option, like a medium priority mode? don't notify me of all replies, just notify me of a reply if the account is followed by at least one person that i follow this way you leverage the farcaster social graph to boost accounts that are in your indirect network thoughts?

Thanks for addressing. Totally understand and have always been on your side of the camp on this one. I think "bots" carry a lot more nuance than what many people realize. I'm not a big fan of the shadowbanning meta, I'd rather just ignore whomever I find uninteresting than risking shadowbanning legit accounts that just might not be great at engagement. :)

won't bots have different definitions for different set of users as its about the relevance of your feed? While i get there could be a min threshold suited for all, but with the advent of gen AI, this might get even more tricky.

What are the counter arguments on adding a Sybil Detection step somewhere along the way, not necessarily right at account creation, to avoid having that as friction but still trying to clean a bit of the trash that comes in?

It all make sense, but wouldn't it be better to separate the bot accounts from other users with a specific badge? IMHO, one of the problems now is that it takes time to recognize them for more engagement! many people cannot recognize them.

I understand the point is how to properly detect as soon as possible that someone “that’s actually a person” is or not just a tips farmer and how to do that in a way that you don’t make the onboarding of new people become uninteresting or with too much fuss that they just give up and never get to enjoy the fun of being here. That balance is really the key we need to get to and only these discussions, that act kinda like a brainstorm of ideas, will get us there eventually.

Wouldn't reply moderation in channels "fix" a big part of the spam/bot replies problem? Require all replies to main feed casts pass the moderation filter or have a separate reply moderation filter or have the original caster have lite moderation tools in only their replies if they themselves pass the moderation filter

I think there is too much drama around the bot thing and the spam... There is a mute button. There are not that many bots. The tipping meta is fading away, so the bots! Im sure the majority of the users are happy with what they have right now! I am one of the biggest criticizing voices and right now this place is awesome and even better day by day, excess of moderation is going to turn new users away, teach warpcast users to use the mute button!!! Also a mute for channels will be great!

it's difficult. I think its important that we grow the user base and that happens by helping newcomers who cast interesting stuff and reply with interesting comments the attention they deserve but agreed it is difficult to counter the bots and farmers who just keep casting rubbish.

#2 is specifically important, I can’t get any of my friends that I got on the app to keep interacting and using the app because they get no engagement even if there posting quality content. I’m not complaining lmao I’ve been casting daily for months now and I love the purple place but I can see how new users just don’t even want to attempt at providing value to the community due to no eyes on them, especially like a month ago when farmers were taking the feed (fixed now) but idk idk just rambling 😇

• Ways to break through: - Borrow ideas from Gitcoin's points system perhaps? - While this addresses only a small percentage, I think could be a start: if I’m a power user and onboard someone, that new user could start with more points, bringing them closer to earning a power badge, for example.
