I find the backlash to platforms experimenting with new ways for digital artists to earn money for their work to be fascinating. If price per work is high, artists like it but the potential market of customers is significantly smaller, especially in a bear market. If price per work is low, artists don't like it but the potential market of customers is significantly larger, even despite a bear market. If 2021 NFT mania was an anomaly, then clearly the internet-native approach is lower price, larger market. But emotionally, that feels bad. Wonder how you bridge that.

the other issue is when the art/media becomes a coin, the “wen number go up” pressure begins — and most want nothing to do with that. (same during 2021 nft craziness)

I think for many collectors or consumers, it’s about connection and how good the artist/creator is at establishing that and building on it I think we have a lot of really cool tools for various onchain art and creative output but we don’t have enough artists/creators who know how to market and grow their audience (which is very hard)

Bridge it with strategy. Artists need business acumen and a decent amount of self-awareness to identify the different use cases.

Backlash against Zora didn’t happen overnight. It started last August when they drastically slashed the “free mint” value and revamped the protocol to chase that Instagram-for-web3 vibe. Then came the poorly named “retroactive community grant,” which eroded trust—only bots/farmers grabbed the funds, leaving genuine community humiliated, especially after Jacob downplayed nearly a million dollars and now this. if they set aside the narrative of “helping creators,” it would actually work better for them. Zora once managed to attract artists from Tezos to ETH thanks to the appeal of Primitive Zora, but now everyone is shifting back to minting on Tezos. I say this with regret, because Zora had been /kismetcasa partner twice before all these changes.

There already is no true market for artists in this space: it’s long gone. I’d like all the teams in this space to quit trying to use “art” as a carrot on the stick when it’s never actually the carrot on the stick in the end. There isn’t an actual appreciation for the arts to capitalize on—in the entire species writ large. The only thing now that can ever be marketed to the masses is: slop.

The backlash you’re seeing for Zora is based on depreciating primitives that artists liked and understood, plus forcing them to adopt new models without their consent. I get it for Zora, think it’s the right decisions and is directionally right but understand the backlash too.

I’m biased as a musician in terms of unit economics of creative production, but I don’t think price per work matters. It always grinds down towards zero when your distribution medium is digital. Only thing that matters is how reliably you can pay bills without taking time away from the practice.

Interesting question. Artists in this space are already the most adaptable ones. We create and try to monetise by stacking income streams. Squeezing earnings outnof that is hard. The promise of a larger potenttial market is there, but many will not see that materialize. It's one of the reasons I have started my grant fund, but I'm a small potato. One bridge we need to build is to get artist actually benefiting from said potential.

Analog artist don’t rely on one gallery to sell all their work, so they shouldn’t rely on one platform IRL most artists make livings through a lot of different manners, that should be no different than on the Internet What artists struggle with is narrative and that is hard to do when attention from the timeline is fickle

experimentation is a great thing. its a required thing to find new ways for creators to be successful and connect to their collectors. if you aren't a fan of the model, good thing there are different options out there. the beauty of web3 :)

I don’t think it’s a backlash. It’s just that content creators have seen a lot of schemes come and go. Many are holding lots of content and waiting for a sustainable way forward. Content discovery is critical. So far I have seen none, especially with coins. They end up in exchange and die. If you were to develop the idea of creator coins tied to an identity, that is a step forward. We agree on that. But move the needle substantially, we need an easy way for creators to attach metadata to their content that can get indexed. Something along the linesof schema.org.

2021 mania wasn’t an anomaly, it happened again in 2023-24 with memecoins. just different vehicles with which to ride the wave of speculation.
