Trump’s shooting put the nail in the coffin for an already diminishing support base. It started with the debate, and it’s been downhill since then. The public piece that really changed was the demoralization of the entire party after seeing poll results of swing states moving to Trump; history repeats itself as it did with Reagan. I sincerely think people just started to give up. IMO the private piece is that Biden is likely suffering from Parkinson’s disease as there’s been several hints of symptoms in the last few months. I think they’ll be lucky if they can get him to last the rest of his term :/ Overall really sad, people this old shouldn’t be in the most stressful office 🫥

Do you read Nate Silver’s newsletters? Seems like you’d enjoy it. The answer is simpler than many imagine. He was pressured to drop out within these 16 days. Had there been no pressure, there’d be no dropping out. Pressure increased, he succumbed, realizing his chance of winning was close to 0, and that Democrats would keep embarrassing him more and more. It sounds like hindsight, but I think it was pretty inevitable, as long as more and more pressure built.

Trump got shot. Seemed to unify the other party so much major donors started dropping out and refusing to give more funds. When the money gets nervous you’re in trouble especially during voting season

I think Pelosi's intervention was a big part of getting him to come around, courtesy of Seymour Hersh

I don’t think anything. Just took a while for the movement to grow.

Ignore all other responses. What changed was funding started to be pulled and prominent Democrats like Pelosi and Obama stepped in and called for him to back out. His chest thumping no longer mattered.

The debate forced a truth, general public could no longer doubt themselves privately which made the share illusion collapse at internet speed.

follow the money—and the 💰 is gone — then real pressure from Congress because they were losing 💰— then Covid. This should have happened a year ago.
