Working theory is Jack did a heroic dose of mushrooms/ketamine after a two week fast, envisioned a perfect future running on Bitcoin rails, and has been unable to reconfigure those neural pathways.

It’s not even close to 10x as good as the alternative (Venmo, Apple Pay) No reason for it to ever take off

BC lightning is dumb and does not work correctly for any real payments use case at scale

Most people view bitcoin as an investment product, not as money to be used for payments. If the Robinhood app made a feature where you could pay for stuff directly with your Apple stocks I think it would get similarly low usage.

Viktor Bunin’s response is the most plausible answer People don’t want trade BTC, they want to hold it. So why make a faster payment network, when it’s not what people want?

Lack of merchants that accept Bitcoin / no demand buy coffee with BTC -> no Amex points -> less vacation 🫠

No demand, lots of friction Last I looked it had less volume and activity than Tier 3 Ethereum Layer 2s Upon quickly glancing, activity seems to have picked up a little, now roughly it’s in between the activity of Tier 2 and Tier 3 Ethereum L2s (metrics don’t line up 1:1 so some more analysis required)

Has Cash disclosed their lightning volume or is it anywhere in the public?

I think the only way a payment system based on crypto will ever take off is with stable coins. People just don't want to pay for everyday things with a speculative asset.

because there’s no Stablecoin. Why would anyone want to buy a coffee with a highly volatile currency?

If setting it up as a user has as many hurdles as setting up zaps for Nostr then there's your answer. (Although the egirls seem to be doing fine there, so maybe it's my age.) Every hurdle is one too many for adoptation. This is one of the main differences between (US) closed and open source software. That, and hype.

BTC + Lightning doesn't even have enough bandwidth for every human to open a channel at birth and close it 80 years later.

What I find most interesting is Jack’s continued laser focus. There could be many answers. Seems he’d have hedged a bit by now.
