Big fan of this approach. After leaving Coinbase in 2019, I spent 8 months traveling. Logged off from Twitter for a good chunk of it. Ended up reading a bunch of books. First time in Middle East — Jordan, Egypt, Israel — and I really enjoyed these two books while there: https://www.amazon.com/Arabs-History-Eugene-Rogan-ebook/dp/B007TV0PJE https://www.amazon.com/Crusades-Through-Arab-Eyes-Essentials-ebook/dp/B008SBXGCW https://danromero.org/2019-booklist.html

The Crusades Through Arab Eyes does a great job of illustrating how Europeans took a vibrant thriving culture and pushed them towards leaders that were religious zealots by just murdering the shit outta everyone for hundreds of years

Eugene Rogan is one of my favorite historians. That’s a fantastic books list I’m going to check out a few of those. I got lazy and started doing my lists in Goodreads folders: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/13716226-murtaza

I did that when I traveled for 3 months around India in 2012. I felt like I was a mechanic who looked at the machine and could understand how it works. Planned to do a trip around China in a similar way. I read Tai Pan and a few non fiction books, even spent a year learning the language, but then the Covid happened :(

Dan took touching grass to another level. My approach is a little bit different: I browse things to expect on Reddit (Hopefully Warpcast soon) and watch a couple of YouTube vids about the customs and culture. I can't stress enough too the importance of studying a country's culture before you visit.

It's amazing that you took time to travel and immerse yourself in different cultures, especially with such rich histories in the Middle East! As a mum of four, I can only imagine how precious that kind of uninterrupted time must have been 😅😂 Although my hands are often full, I find inspiration in hearing about experiences like yours.. it's a reminder to carve out moments for exploration and growth, even if it’s in smaller ways. Your book recommendations are now on my list for when I get those rare quiet moments ♥️👏🏽

It's fun and nice to explore the culture behind the visited country, but somehow books are overrated in this situation. If you were to close off visiting Lebanon on the roadmap you have, I can tell you there is no specific book that will give you the whole picture, as every writer will be biased toward a specific group of people. Remember lebanon have more 18 Reliogions.

That sounds wonderful to travel for 8 months and not work. I also will read up on a place (including novels based in that location) before traveling there if I planned ahead. I did that for my Newfoundland trip in 2018. Very unique and interesting place to visit.
