spent the weekend with my granddad, he is 85 now and got married at 25 he started the family in a poor, socialist country, in a depth of the cold war, with no real career prospects or financial security average 25 year old men these days are 10x better off and don’t even consider starting families feels backwards

weird, I'm constantly told by Americans that communism is good just hasn't been done right. Yet, anyone I ask who has lived through it seems to not like it. I'm sure they are wrong, though.

there are certainly people who liked it: 1) nostalgia fetishists ("life was simpler back then") — they basically wouldn't care if it was the other way around, they just dwell on their past 2) system beneficiaries — people who got ahead by stomping on others or bootlicking 3) lazy asses — happiest when nobody capable could get ahead 4) ideologists — they just don't care about anything besides their opinion being right no matter how many people die or suffer there're still many ex-communists in government (plus literally communist party used to get into parliament until recently)

Is it actually "weird" if you accept the premise that "it hasn't been done right", then perhaps the people who lived through it (like myself and my family) didn't live through the "done right" version (whatever that may be)?

Anyone who lived under or next to a communist state knows what a terror it is. Anyone idolizing it has succumbed to propaganda.

My parents often told me stories about their childhood in communist romania. Crazy stuff like how people would smuggle wstern candies, that there were shops exclusively for the party members/high ranking people and that brothers were almost sent to prison for not giving part of the produce to the state because it was ment for a funeral. Commies think the money is the root of all problems, but when you take that away, social status becomes the new currency. Occupation, knowing the right people, being from a respected family, etc. effectively reintroduced all the class issues that communism was trying to eradicate.

You’ve imported communism as soon as you’ve brought Comintern and Frankfurt School alumni to America in 1920s and 1930s. It took a while for it to kick off, but technically you’re already living through communism right now, just upgraded.

Older generations of Romanians romanticize communist times. . . Everyone had jobs. Poland is going through big economic growth, romania in contrast not so much. Romania privatized industry haphazardly. . . Not sure if the result is as extreme as the oligarchs in Russia who took advantage of privatization

Perhaps you have a small sample. My mother and her parents, for example, believe that they lived much better in the USSR. And there are quite a lot of such people. The products variety was lower than now, but there was a guaranteed job after free education and a free apartment for your family after a few years of work.

The concept of it isn't that bad. Equality. The execution often seems to end in dictatorship and nepotism.
