Upcoming channel changes We're *previewing* some upcoming changes so people 1) can understand and 2) provide feedback. These changes are not launching yet. It will be a couple weeks. There will also be a bunch of communication to channel owners. After reading the entire doc, feel free to reply to with feedback or send me a DC. I've tried to answer a lot of common questions in the FAQ. https://warpcast.notion.site/Upcoming-channel-changes-1056a6c0c101800caee6ea8133f8f966

It’s cool to have memberships, but this just add friction to new comers. I’ve invited several friends and the best feature they find is channels, because it is a great way to find content, get seen, and make friends… but how will a new comer make friends around here if they find all channels gated?

Cast and reply to people outside of channels. We've tried the open channel model for a year and it doesn't work well enough. So we're trying a new direction.

What about the open channel model wasn't working well enough? Curious as to what problem the membership solves. Is this more about mitigating spam? On /tabletop, for instance, I have noticed a ton of spam in Recent, but I sometimes scroll through it just to see legitimate comments that didn't make it into Main.

I also think is all about bots/spam... Maybe just creating tools that mods can use to filter whatever they like or don't, would be a nice solution, instead of the other way around where we are left with no choice at all.

That makes sense, then. Membership mitigates the spam, and then allows channel owners to just ban them. I also consider legitimate user cast visibility to be a problem too, though. @dwr.eth. It may not be as apparent to bigger accounts, because it isn't a problem for them, but try it with a new account. For example, things I cast into other channels sometimes don't make it into Main (I have one I posted yesterday in /farcaster that never made it to Main) because I'm not followed by the channel owner or my cast wasn't liked by them (so it default dumps into Recent). Of course, the argument could be made that my cast wasn't interesting, and I guess that is fair. On the flip side, there are channel owners like @ispeaknerd.eth that are really diligent about helping with content visibility because they want their channel to grow and members to feel heard...but there are some channels where legitimate casts get no visibility, and that is frustrating.

@dnznjuan Maybe "membership" will help that, because member posts will show, even without a moderators interaction. My hope is that membership doesn't create a scenario where new users feel left out and are like, "let me in!!!" @dwr.eth will membership invites be from any current member?
