where would you want to see this chart go? political debate tends to be this tiresome thing where one tribe shouts "good! more!" and the other "bad! less!" harder question is what's the right amount & why?

my own basic left-curve answer is "more than 0 and less than 50" & apparently we're right up against the upper end of that

If US gov. spending gets over 50% of the economy does it mean that the US becomes a socialist country?

Personal opinion: max 25% and around 10% fixed with another 10% available for investments. How to get there? Do a mind exercise of fire everyone and only hire what’s needed + cut all expenses and only buy what you need. Then make this the actual size of gov Focus on maximum efficiency in processes

hard to answer without first aligning on the role of government in society? the good-more camp tends to view role of gov as: security + services. the bad-less camp tends to view role of gov as security only. many disagreements and tribal alliances are downstream of this imo

interesting question, my kneejerk is that the fiscal structure dictates how it compensates for environment. my followup is besides war & modern approach to epidemics, is the "buy wall" just modern entitlements? if so, is it subsidized demand not recycling to surplus, or too extensive a necessary beneficiary base?

I’d start by examining what happened between WW2 and ~2000 Why did spending ramp up? What was it used for? Was it successful?

Almost 50% of these expenses are « Social Insurances »: Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Veterans Benefits. In my opinion, this part of the spending should be separated from the rest as they are very popular and the results of long term commitments.

Whether you lean right or left, I think most can agree that a large portion of this money is not well spent. Much better outcomes could be achieved by spending the same % of GDP in better ways.
