or they just sucked at implementing socialism, besides the fact that it's a country that has been under the severest sanctions and constant coup attempts orchestrated by the most powerful country in the world

I dunno, Chavez did it pretty well overall. I actually visited the country, and he implemented great communal practices and upskill initiatives in poor neighborhoods. Despite assassination & coup attempts, despite US-funded paramilitia, they were still doing OKish until he was gone. Maduro had the same challenges but he played into US's hands a lot with his authoritarian practices IMHO.

You could say we were doing okay, but things were never truly good. The problem is when things go bad year after year, it eventually creates a snowball effect. Maduro accelerated the decline, but it all started during Ch谩vez's presidency.

I mean if you're a capitalist, sure. But I'll take data + poor people's anectodes over other anectodes as truth.

Is that data from the government? You need to take what they say with a pinch of salt. They always say things are good and perfect when it's not. If you compare today's Venezuela with Chavez's Venezuela, then yes. Those were the golden days.

Data is from Central Bank + Institute of Statistics & Census (INEC); used, aggregated and visualized by independent institituons like CEPR. If these institutions trust the data, I trust it too. Especially more than online anectodal posts. Especially when I saw the change with my own eyes too.
