What role does ETH mainnet play in this cycle? With so much attention being driven to L2s like @base it begs the question... are people ever going to use L1 again? Is that a bad thing if the answer is no? And what does that mean for ETH as a store of value? Discuss.

Mainnet is and was always supposed the be the settlement layer. L2s are the app / consumer layer. L3 is the optimization layer. Banks will be stoked to use mainet, consumers will use Base.

There's still value for large value txs on l1 to know that your assets are secured by best in class validator set Meme coins and most nfts don't need to be on L1 and that's ok

seeing the bid on $wQUIL I'm reminded of the power of Mainnet its a different role, but huge amount of ETH & stablecoin liquidity is there still

Even if most users never touch mainnet, it's still where ETH is secured. Every transaction—including L2 proofs—burns ETH, making it more scarce. This couples with increased rate of staking to make the circulating supply even more scarce, and the network even more secure. That's the end game.

I will always use mainnet for my original art. There is more security with it long term so it’s better for more valuable assets.

Think of L1 as Manhattan. It’s necessary for large institutions and even nation states to be present there, regardless of the cost. But an average person can get along just fine in a secondary or tertiary market (L2s). They can even grow a successful biz there. But they will rely on the financial infra in Manhattan.

If people are using L2s or L3s this is still on Ethereum which = increased activity and good for Ethereum holders

L1 will def be the finality consensus settlement later. Base and other rollups/L2s rely on the success of L1 ETH just as much as they improve L1.

I'm curious if the institutions will use the L1 or build their own L2.

Many of these L2s are ETH-native. ETH is the most liquid currency (as the default trading pair) and it is the gas token as well. I think ETH will continue to be valuable.

It does seem that there’s a fundamental tension between ETH as sound money and ETH as cheap L1 network for rollups. I feel like that tension is finally being talked about.
