This is our small but excellent farmers market in Tegu. Often when I eat the produce here I wonder what the hell is going on with U.S. produce.

Outside of the major cities which can maintain daily markets (e.g. union sq in NYC), here on the east coast the supply chain has optimized for shelf life and long periods between harvest and sale. Also as population growth has continued over the past two decades, and total fruit and veg consumption has increased, production inside the US has basically been flat, as we’ve relied on imports to meet demand. There are a few exceptions to this, yet it’s mostly due to labor costs.

and this is why decentralizing agriculture in America is my life’s work for the next 20 or so years before we start strip mining landfills

American produce spends takes longer to get to the store - doesn’t taste as fresh.

Looks amazing. I don’t have any trouble finding fresh produce in the U.S. (major city, daily farmer’s markets). But I imagine the year round demand for fresh but out of season produce causes a lot of the issues here. Combined with pesticides, hormones, GMOs, and other chemicals, it’s a disaster situation. But what’s the alternative for 400MM+ people?

Local farmer market is always best than any super market.. They produce fresh vegetables, not only fresh but also cheaper than any super market, Isn’t it?
