Before channels were decentralized, WC experimented with a short-lived channel to discuss WWDC and maybe some sports event (I don’t remember). You could call it a “flash” channel. It was meh. But I think it was close to something good. When notable events happen, casts/threads are not the best for real-time discussion. These kinds of conversations are best unstructured and somewhat off the record. What works on Twitter is live spaces. What someone says in a space isn’t obvious from their feed. This can be emboldening. Also, the “I was there” feeling is rewarding and is an itch that isn’t scratched currently with WC. Does WC need spaces? No. What WC has is DCs. Can something be done with them? Flash DC groups where FOMO drives engagement? Presidential debates are around the corner, and I’d like a Temporary convo with others, without polluting my feed with lame political musings. The same is true with WWDCs and other unexpected events such as Altman’s past board dispute at OpenAI.

Yeah, agree we need something ephemeral. No reason these couldn't be decentralized, probably just a different namespace.

I've started leaning towards the idea that this kind of app does not need casts. It could be an app that uses the Farcaster social graph and identity, to host such ephemeral discussions (about an event, a game, etc.) somewhere else. Maybe post a cast that the discussion happens <here>. And then at some point, wrap it up, maybe even mint the whole discussion as an NFT, and that's it. One could think of such a structure as a Farcaster rollup.

Narrowcasting in contextual, ephemeral channels. In lieu of truly temporary/disposable channels, maybe it’s possible to just change the moderation criteria after the event to essential prevent any additional commentary.

Is it enough if people think the data is ephemeral or does the data need to be ‘private’ to only those present at time of a cast eg. Been playing with FIP-2 ‘og channels’ for this ephemeral live chat feeling. Sadly, there is no concept or norm for honoring an apps context-container. eg d33m sends a cast to a FIP-2 ‘popup’ channel (d33m room) for a Euros match & WC pollutes home freed & followers w notifications. Name spaces might help here.

Hadn’t thought about this but it’s totally true that “serious” channel discussions and threads are not optimal for these live events. Spinning up chat boxes like YouTube streams or football websites would be very cool. There would be a lot of chaos but among some (likely smaller) events also cool new connections! 1000 $degen
