Dazed and Confused came out in 1993 and was based in 1976. A comparable movie today would be based in 2007 The reason that 1976 seems much more distant from 1993 than 2007 does from 2024 is that the internet has trapped us in a cultural forever-present, unable to move into the future because the things of the past never fade from sight. We inhabit a static, stuck, ersatz culture.

70's were like polar opposite from 90's in fashion and hairdos and car designs and beers and parties and attitude, which made that movie seem way more distant. 2007 vs now was like similar plastic cars, similar fashion albeit more relaxed now maybe, similar beers, parties that feature more looking down at phones now... But overall similar culture versus 70's and 90's.

i just watched twilight for the first time and while the first movie’s effects do look like shit, the fashion and tropes aren’t that different. we need more art. we’ve become stuck in backwards looking financial optimization especially in cinéma for too long. new new wave lets go

Surprised nobody has mentioned the millennium effect. The rollover to the 2000 had a strong psychological effect on our collective experience of time imo. Pre-2000 feels retro, while post 2000 feels more modern. A good example of this is how we instinctively and erroneously refer to a lot of things from early 2000’s culture as being “from the 90s.”

Or simply we never lived in 1976 so it legitimately feels like before our time 2007 was yesterday

It doesn’t help that the primary sources that drive art culture forward are also stuck in a perpetual loop. Every movie is a remake or lazy expansion on something that already exists (Marvel, Star Wars, etc.).

Most people discovered Dazed and Confused years after it was made, which affects this too.

try watching a movie from 2007 with a high schooler today, they'll let you know how retro it seems

Interesting thought and I totally agree, as someone who was alive in 1976 (although as a child). It seems like a huge difference to me from 1976 to 1993 and 2007 doesn't seem like that different from now - not culturally at least. Even 2004 doesn't seem that different.
