Web3 has the power to change the world and replace existing societal structures. If it didn’t feel tribal something would be wrong

The technology enables tribalism Anyone can create a collective aligned around a common goal/values then raise and deploy money to effectuate those goals/values

The role of $ can't be understated. Does web3 even exist, culturally? Yes, but it competes with web2.5, which I'd argue is actually winning the mindshare of the space. Greed and hype are rampant and big investments by orgs that only seek to extract value hurts the community-focused vision of web3

Think it’s microcosm of the tribalism that already existed in OSS. Web3 just added financial incentives / alignment on top. Comes down to differing ideological views + financial alignment with those same views

The thing about tribes, though, is early adopters have a strong connection to the original mission. Late joiners have a weak connection. So eventually it’s a mass of people chanting something they may not actually believe in or understand. It becomes a movement of sheep. https://warpcast.com/manuelmaccou/0x37e02f

Hmmm 🤔 Crypto challenges core values (self sovereignty vs socialized security) and identities (American/dollar vs global/btc), and threatens existing power structures. So there is resistance. It then requires some level of courage to get into, and then people want the safety of being in a tribe??

This is such a marvelous question. Imo, it’s because all cultural shifts *must* start via tribal games. I have found web3 resembles that akin to early human tribes(wo)men cultures. Look at us now!

Maybe because the “out group” & the “in group” dynamics. People who were locked out of participating (in markets, new things, investments) found their “in groups”, and some tied their identities to those. Perhaps they found some things akin to “meaning”, as well as vested interests in groups success.

To build off @adrienne, challenging core values was the spark. This creates strong emotion and gets passionate people running towards the ideal state chanting their mantra. More people join feeding off the emotion and adopt it, feeling a part of something that they are willing to strongly defend
