Having a strong sense of identity will, more often than not, prevent you from evolving and becoming fulfilled "I'm not the kind of person who" - cares about clothes - listens to classical music - cares about money - cares about rules ... - is cut out for this - learns new things - takes more risks Your "identity" is just the comfort zone of your ego; it's not who you are You're not your name, your gender, your star sign, your parents, your ethnicity, your heritage, your passion, not even your dreams None of these things matter You are only what you do You are intent embodied, a thing becoming, purpose in motion Or you can choose to be your static, predetermined, finite, labeled self Choice is yours

Here's what I'm wondering: How do you balance this idea of constant becoming with the need for some sense of stability or continuity in life? Like, is there a way to stay open to change and growth without completely losing your anchor? Or is that anchor itself just another comfort zone we need to let go of?

i actually think the opposite.. A strong sense of identity is not the problem. Knowing who you are is very important. If you don’t know who you are then you allow others to define you by default.. and that’s a problem.. However, what i find to be the biggest problem with identity is being rooted in the wrong “identity” “I’m not the type of person who”.. has more to do with personality, not identity. We’re all different and it’s okay to have preferences.. Ego has more to do with insecurities.. so a person who is confident in their identity tends not to operate with their ego.. Just some food for thought

You find me completely agree with this statement. Especially for creative people, “identity” is more a stop than a go. Being women or man, Italian or Japanese, should be irrelevant in the artist life. If it’s relevant you’re not doing well imo.

Absolutely. ‘evolve or die’ has been a motto my husband and I adopted a few years back and it’s surprisingly liberating, while terrifying. Reading your cast I’m realizing that an easy trap for me is my artist identity. Even though my career proves otherwise, I’m noticing some inner critic dialogue. Thank you for this, truly perfect timing as I’m in the midst of a big shift.

I completely agree that we are what we do, not even what we dream of… but only what we choose to do and pursue.

You’ll just get lost and feel hollow if you attach your identity just only to what you do imo. If you don’t currently have a purpose in respect of what you said, it means you don’t exist. To me, everything around you defines you

Hmmm But aren't these the things that determine the kind of person we become. The toughest part is shifting your mind from a life you were born into
