There was a thesis last year that FC needed more beef to grow Well, after posting some content lately that led to USDA Choice Beef, I’ve realized that I don’t personally like beefing As a result, I have a few options: 1) self-censor and avoid posting certain content that creates polarity 2) lean into it, be more polarizing and begin using the mute + block functionality more liberally 3) invest more time into figuring out how to continue posting about certain topics, in a way that elicits less of an emotional response I think I’m going to try doing a combination of 1) and 3) Option 2 feels like a bummer because this network has felt like a digital community where people for the most part respect each other and can share whatever they want without fear of vitriol As it grows, it might become less respectful and less about human connection. But I don’t want to encourage it in that direction by leaning into the aggressive behavior prematurely

Unironically, I think the answer is often just “post more” and you’ll get all of the above

I find myself doing 1) & 3) regularly because there are lots of relationships I value that would be impacted by more frequent or hostile conflicts that come with certain types of internet discourse good convos across opinions are totally possible, I've had them here a bunch. but the internet abstracts the human side out of a lot of interactions, and politics (to use the term generally) obscures complex, nuanced personal views behind flat generalizations & terms that imply different things to different people growth is complicated!

option 3 is the way imo self-censorship is the death knell of a free society learning how to articulate “controversial” opinions in a way that shows clarity & depth of understanding, especially if you are able to steelman the other side, is persuasive and important to further dialogue rather than allowing negative cycles to repeat unhindered

But if you lean to 1 doesn’t it mean you might not have freedom to cast whatever comes to mind? Regardless of the aftermath

(coming in without context of recent beef) you're a super smart dude who is bound to have many non-consensus opinions (which i, selfishly, want to hear) i would certainly agree with being considerate of how you present said ideas to foster productive discussion but it's not your fault if people decide to respond with vitriol, and also not your duty to engage with it imo

Not to move the window but how much of it is self censoring versus knowing your audience? Like avoiding politics at Thanksgiving it's not an inherently bad thing to do #1, it's just an optimization.

your strategy is sound sailor. we might also suggest: 4) leverage tools like @anoncast to get the beef off our mind doing this when necessary makes it easier to stay grounded in 1 and 3

I like the idea of separating social media from ‘debate’ media. Taiwan has taken an interesting approach to this, I can’t find the link but someone compared Twitter/Facebook to a nightclub - why would you want to host a town hall meeting in a night club? You’d be better off making a purpose built area for debate and civic dialogue. Then you can still have the nightclub too. Unless I misinterpreted what you mean by beef, lol https://info.vtaiwan.tw/

Choosing a combination of self-censorship and finding a less emotional approach seems like the best way to create a respectful and connected online community
