Being a middle school student is very tricky. Basically, I treat them the way I treat my children according to their personalities. My son doesn't talk a lot, so he talks and sometimes I make decisions that are more in line with his views. For example, if he says he wants to miss school today because he made a mistake at school yesterday and his classmates made fun of him for it, I would not force him to go. I would respect that he chose his words carefully and communicated them properly. My daughter will cry and tell me immediately if she doesn't like something. It may be because she is the same sex, but the next day she goes to school normally. Maybe she feels better by crying, but I think she has a strong mental attitude. I respect her for that. There is surely no right answer to parenting. It does not work the way the parenting books say it should. However, I think my parenting is passable as long as the children feel that their mom understands their feelings from their side.
