Can Farcaster, the protocol not the current app, handle video? Related: What's keeping someone from building a Web 3 version of TikTok?

Thanks Nicole! @antonio: TikTok can’t go into web3 because of music IP mostly We at Showtime are trying to do it, but it’s mostly images still. Video is a little harder to implement well, and NFTs are seen as either drops or badges, less so “media content”.

Ah....but someone could clone TikTok on web 3 I assume? The music IP thing is interesting and something I wouldn't have thought about.

Yes, they rely on licenses (not sure whether streaming or labels) that is illegal to web3-ify. This is why web3 music is original content and/or indie artists.

They have deals with labels now, but in the early days (maybe back when it was still musical.ly), I believe they were able to use snippets of < 30 seconds under fair use.

which part? in the early days, it would've been impossible to get a deal to license music, not to mention an impediment to development. and i don't think there would've been legal issues if the service was small enough.

it looks like, as they grew into something more viable and raised capital, they were able to strike deals with third-parties that worked with the labels and with the labels themselves to put the music on their platforms legally and in a way that respected copyright.

Makes sense. I meant about the <30 seconds fair use!

almost did something similar a long time ago and i think that is what we were banking on at the time, but the legal issues are definitely complicated with music licensing and startups have died because of their inability to navigate that minefield
