Children! Four years ago, in the midst of the first pandemic lockdown, I tried to process what was happening (spruce bark beetle outbreak x covid outbreak = havoc) through a 20 minute and 20 seconds long video, put together in just a week by means of an artist talk: https://youtu.be/pCSV9YyNKFA?feature=shared

It’s part of a chapter in my thesis, based on this amazing collection of essays in particular: https://academic.oup.com/book/35192 Totally recommended!

Oh, yes! And how they fooled even Arthur Conan Doyle! It’s amazing how after over 150 years of photographic image manipulation people are still so naive when it comes to images, right? See the whole AI will change our perception of reality discussions, haha.

Retracing the steps of my artistic trajectory keeps taking me back to my obsession with spirit photography of the late 1800s and early 1900s. This is technology as mediator for the invisible, the ‘occult’. This type of trick photography I tried to copy in the darkroom was my gateway to Photoshop. Image from 2002.

Off to the opening of the group show 16UP, celebrating 16 years of art space 38CC in the Dutch town of Delft. Happy to have The Three Motions of Loom tapestries included! The Three Motions are related to Fundamental Mechanics through their association with 16th century visual culture of my region.

I don’t blame anyone for looking for alternatives for X, we all agree it is a dreadful place: it was one of the reasons I came here!

It’s not about you personally, but about the ‘community’ flocking from one platform to another that feels tiring to me. But then again, perhaps I am just getting old, hehehe

To me, it sounds like the algorithms of the other apps are replaced with the promise of income – the whole idea is to keep you on the app. And as you say, you don’t believe it will last – what then? Jump to another novel platform? It sounds exhausting to me! But good for you, Kisz, I wish everyone the best!

Yes, exactly the things of the NFT space that I was always sceptical about. Can you briefly explain to me how this ‘degen’ is transformed into real money? I am to uninterested to look it up online (also, I tried, but documentation was hard to find).

Free money? ‘Allowance’. You’re not helping the case, Kisz, haha! Mysterious fountain magically manifests allowances for its user base: cult vibes is what I am getting here.

‘Content creators’. I am not sure what that means anymore; everyone is a ‘content creator’, posting has been monetized one way or another already. Anyway, I really doubt this app is ‘the way’. Like you say, something like this gets perverted quite quickly: when $-signs appear.

Yeah, well, selling NFTs for € 1 is also like tipping. Are there any collectors here? Or are artists just tipping each other? I understand it’s an attempt at rewarding social media engagement beyond data-selling companies, but the ‘sales’ part is exactly the issue of ‘social’ media. ‘Sales media’ it is.

On another note, I just found out the amazing Markus Selg has arrived on Tezos! https://objkt.com/tokens/KT1VwoVLNN8rKhUYrekUgLqxsACQ5ouHdQkc/0 If you don’t know his work, do look him up. Markus has been working on the cusp of installation art and theatre set design for a long time.

Tesla guy did a terrible job running the social media platform, we all agree on that, hahaha. You know, sometimes I miss early Myspace – at least, an experience of customising one’s profile and such. Myspace taught me html and css, like Tumblr did for others.

Ha, yes, the Degen thing is completely beyond me! Social media is stressful enough as it is without a rewarding system, right? Also, for me, I am not at all interested in niche-social medias as alternatives for X and such: it feels like facilitating fenced off bubbles while opening up seems much better.
