Why do we consume our feeds algorithmically but our chats chronologically?

The current chat UX treats all messages as if they’re the same level of importance or relevance even though they’re not, especially in larger groups

This leads to notification fatigue which in turn causes members to mute and check out

I think this is one of the biggest limitations of apps like TG and Discord esp as they’re increasingly used by growing communities

No one wants to clear notifications from a bunch siloed chats, just show me the most interesting discussions that I missed and encourage me to participate

Define “interesting”

I find content on here interesting because it’s either a) from my friends or b) from people who share my interests (potential new friends)

Farcaster doesn’t have to be the place for the most engaging or high-quality content, we can share that here from other platforms (and discuss it!)

I don’t think it’s about turning group chats into channels (i.e. gated write, public read) although that’s interesting

To me the more interesting part is consuming group chats in an algo feed rather than chronologically, feels like the natural evolution, best of both worlds

I don’t think it maps 1:1 but I think there is a specific type of group chat that could just be a channel instead. There is a gap in the market waiting to be filled

Threads definitely make it easier to follow a conversation and I think the threaded nature of casts is a good place to start

although we should acknowledge that some group chat content won't make it to channels even if they "feel" like chats, given the public-read nature

That’s true, although I think most people underestimate how much they’re willing to say publicly vs. privately (social has just swung private recently so that’s become the default)

I also think taking this a step forward and mixing private chats into the feed would be an interesting experiment

I think they’re a mix of both but primarily became popular in a social context for read-gating since the timeline can often be too woke and cancel culture is a bitch

Especially true when something goes viral which is more possible now than ever before due to the proliferation of algo feeds (which also tend to take things out of context)

I think that write-gating is often a byproduct of read-gating (since the reverse wouldn’t make sense anyway) but if this new direction for channels goes well I can see private (read-gated) chats getting elevated to the feed as well

Do you think that large group chats exist to control read or write? Are they a moderation mechanism, or a way to have "private" conversations? Or something else?

I especially refer to large group chats, with 50, 100, or more members.

I think that's how reddit works

And what also works great for reddit is that you can search for the discussions about product reviews or whatever
