Increasingly convinced that AI will ultimately replace therapists (psychologists, not sure about psychiatrists for a while) Most of their job is to encourage you to share your thoughts and feelings and then reflect them back to you in a way that sheds light on different perspectives LLMs are really good at that

it’s good for learning to speak about your emotions and feel validated but an insane amount of language is vocal tone and body language really important for therapists to know when their patients are misrepresenting situations or lying true narcissists often do not/can not benefit from talk or behavioural therapy bc they have such a distorted perception of reality - the same thing on a smaller scale will likely happen with LLMs as they can’t discern when your typing is honest or dishonest

I disagree Everyone thought that Quicken would replace Accountants, but there's just more work for them now. Also I thin therapists / psychiatrists are a high touch service often as well, and while I think LLMs are useful to get started with, humans still be human and they are hard to beat

So much nonverbal nuance that would be missed though. Like when someone is saying something with their words and communicating extra or contradictory information with their body language, eyes, or tone. Might be helpful for people who would never have gone to therapy otherwise and don’t have anyone trustworthy to talk to, but I don’t think it replaces even decent human therapists. Def better than a crappy or manipulative therapist

I can see this happening on a superficial level ie going to an ai for support/advice on a situation rather than a reddit for instance. I don't think AI will replace the physical act of going to and sitting down With a therapist etc- maybe in the future, generally the human connection aspect of therapy is quite important imo. Interesting thought though, 40 $DEGEN
