In many ways, the current state of the Democratic Party reminds me of the classical music industry, which I’m quite familiar with as a professional conductor. Both have resisted significant change due to the preferences of geriatric insiders. Both have exhibited a peculiar obsession with identity politics that now dominates their agenda to the point of alienating many people. Both hold themselves in irrationally high esteem despite increasing operational sclerosis and cultural irrelevance. Both are manifestations of “champagne socialism,” wherein elites cosplay as progressives through participation in liberal rituals, while in reality eschewing any change that would court lower classes. And on the current trajectory, both are headed towards decline, defeat, and the dustbin of history.

The stakes are much lower for classical music, which is now at best a historical curiosity preserved in the sonic museums that are orchestras, and at worst perpetuators of the discriminatory cultural practices that their myopically progressive administrators claim to disavow. The stakes for the Democrats, on the other hand, couldn’t be larger, with control of the American hegemonic apparatus being the prize. The lesson for both is that survival requires adaptation, and adaptation requires change. If you are not willing to change, then you are not entitled to survive in the modern world, because change is no longer a constant - it is accelerating

I'm quite happy that in my city they try at least to rid themselves of the snobism associated with it hosting short concerts for people who've never been to one before, musicians wear their normal clothes, there's an app for people wanting to read more about the pieces, and a cocktail named after the short series. It's not a lot, but it is something. A few of my friends have become classical enjoyers through these.. Also, why can't we bring back the custom where one was allowed to drink during a concert like in the good old days of the composers we now put on a pedastal? 😂
