not a direct answer, but: i've experienced peak startup productivity when there are 3 people on the team, product person also codes, and we sync via whiteboard or a simple list in a shared doc.

I’ve been on larger teams (heroku, chain) where small sub-teams are coordinated by c{e,t}o. I feel like having a single driver of the sub-teams is key. Adam Wiggins of Heroku was good at this.
