Feels illegal to be casting off topic from frames now – but I just wrote about Arc browser's latest feature & their tenuous user-alignment. TL;DR don't throw throw stones (criticize ads) when you live in a glass house (have no business model) https://zhayitong.com/2024/02/01/arc-alignment.html

Don’t get why the addition of ai would make them any more loss making. Losing money before and now too. If anything I can see ai features being something they charge a monthly subscription for and generate revenue.

great post, have been feeling the same IIRC Miller spent a lot of time publicly critiquing FB at his last startup before he sold to them

I suspect the plan they won't admit public is to try to get acquired by a big tech company. Pivoting away from Arc for Teams subscriptions seems to indicate they don't have a viable business.

Maybe they’ll have to go subscription-based, ChatGPT style. Charge for additional functionality like app generation or agent stuff they can do with your browsing data

Feel like they might be going for subscription model like Perplexity very soon.

Thanks for sharing. Will read. I like what they've done so far and I don't mind them experimenting but their approach is most likely unsustainable. It's also arguably more detrimental to the web than Google's approach.

"Don’t get us wrong — we plan to make a lot of money as a company... from charging companies that want to increase the productivity of their teams across the many tools they use for work, to making it easier and safer to pay for things online" What does this mean in browser speak? https://arc.net/faq

Your take is cynical. While it’s not unfounded and there’s a graveyard of examples, I’m optimistic about what they’re doing. Ultimately they’re trying to make the web better, more usable and faster. This was Google’s to lose and they lost. Experience first, even with ads, could win.
