How does HN topic list design encourage more conversation than Product Hunt's design?

From my assessment, Product Hunt has become a place to signal and force push to get on top to signal more! And most of the comments out there from what I have skimmed through is congrats, good job, excited, etc.

Hackernews removes that visual fluff and rank chasing. It does have upvotes, but most wouldn’t care unless there are discussions going around those launches

The discussions do digress from time to time but it stays within the boundary of that product. The digression but within the boundary is an important factor, as it keep’s fueling the conversations.
