As speculation has faded away in the last few weeks, lasting, sustainable demand has revealed itself. Tron (+USDT) has come into its own, orders of magnitude ahead of any chain not Ethereum. It's a pretty amusing situation, where crypto's greatest consumer product market fit is so embarrassing no one talks about it.

wait why is it embarrassing — is there something weird with the activity? if this is just people paying each other on tron then it's less embarrassing than 99.99% of defi

The two biggest answers to why seem to be 1) a lot of people hate Justin Sun (for good reason IMO) and 2) Tron is very centralized. So kinda undermines many strongly held beliefs about crypto etc. Yet, the numbers don't lie - people are using USDT on Tron by the billions, and burning a ton of $TRX to do so.

yeah both 1) and 2) are very valid but i take that over crypto being useless for everybody imo just a matter of time till rollups get cheap and secure enough that it will be a nobrainer for cexes to use them, just as it is a nobrainer to use justin's or cz's spreadsheets for now

The idea of it being a nobrainer isn’t a given. Proto-Danksharding will go a long way to reduce costs and help L2 adoption but the (arguably larger) impact on adoption will come from teams willing to do the bd work there. History is full of examples “better tech” that don’t always win out.
