ofc there is value in creating content _and_ distributing content

i am asking, concretely, why tokenization is [or will be] a 10x better value prop to today's creators than the web2 equivalent (relevant: https://www.shopify.com/blog/influencer-pricing)

creators owning their following seems pretty valuable, although arguably e.g. substack lets you do that today. And also owning the relationships has nothing to do with tokenizing in particular

my personal intuition (and admittedly biased desire) is that there are far more interesting onchain structures to bring creators, curators, and fans together in long-term alignment for the good-of-all-parties than tokenization. But I am here asking questions to learn and [try to] understand what about tokenization in particular has you so excited

boosting this because i really want to know:

what's the most compelling "_definite_ optimist" take on content tokenization

i vaguely suspect that the tokenistas are right on a long timeline (just look at the trend to date), but i still personally haven't heard anyone make a great case for it. Arguments for it kind of remind me in ~2016 when everyone would talk about decentralized-uber as a killer ethereum use case because "uber takes so much value from the drivers/riders"

I think I can summarize my intuition against tokenizing everything as: some (many?) things (particularly social?) benefit from illegibility, which tokenizing ruins. I do not want a price ticker on my warpcast profile. I do not want a price ticker next to my casts. Creators want to get paid, but I don’t think they want tickers next to everything creation. Illiquidity is a feature for startups, and maybe? illegibility is a feature for creators

This is not optimistic - but pump inevitably got more people addicted to the casino and onboarded people into crypto. Content tokenization might be the simplest and easiest use case for non-crypto native people to understand to be onboarded into the space.

yeah could be.. It's not obvious to me that holding a tiny fraction of a piece of [recent] artwork comes with the same cache as "I hold this 1/1 from this super famous artist from 100y ago"

if the job to be done is stroking ego, i just don't see how you get there from here. if the job to be done is storing wealth, it seems like there are much better options. is there another job to be done to consider?

steelman: genuinely good digital art, could see many pieces trading in the 5-6 figure range

traders running portfolios of tiny percentages of 1000s of pieces each, basically art world curator dynamics + digital markets

doesn’t look like current platforms align with the people who would drive that forward though

The issue with Zora coins is how much fragmentation it makes for an artists. 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

Most art these days making waves is a whole collection not an individual 721 or 1155. Examples of this are: @mendez, @joepease & @ack.eth. If each individual piece had a coin that great from a liquidity specifically for that piece but really the whole collection is what is valuable not the individual piece.

You also miss out on the super power of NFTs which is creating unique subcultures. Think glasses for Punks, or Sharkhead for Nouns. Also how do you even scale this up in a system to build communities. You now have to create token gates for each token vs just 1 contract like it is with NFTs?

Just let artist pick and choose.

I can see both sides of it. Maybe the tech will get better in the long run and these issues get resolved but right now it’s a bad experience.

I also see the side of tokenizing everything bc I imagine a world where all those 4chan memes are tokens and you can own a piece of that history. Pepe would be owned by the people vs whatever we have now where that dude sends cease and desist letters 🤷‍♂️

tbh i don't know anything about "that dude" but it seems to me like pepe _is_ owned by the people??? like people just use and riff on pepe all the time and it's great (and not meaningfully different, afaict, from say doge which was in fact coined)
