what are the most important parts to decentralize?

Hmm, I believe compute is quite important, but truly decentralizing it is challenging. I'm pretty sure that most people who contributed A100s and such to DEPIN projects are actually doing so through a centralized cloud service.

what is the big problem we are trying to solve with decentralizing compute specific to ai though? outside of downtime, which is a UX related problem

Yeah, it's not exclusive to AI only. But I think there's a point to consider: if you operate a decentralized AI network and the whole system runs on AWS, can it truly be considered decentralized? I have the same question regarding most blockchain networks as well.

agreed- decentralized compute is like the base layer of maslow's hierarchy for a truly free information age. zk/op ml for verification has been my primary focus in the hierarchy for the past several months, which imo actually precedes open source models/verified training in importance
