Who knew researching new trail running shoes to buy would bring confusion and sorrow. Why is sizing different across every shoe brand? Why?!! Any recommendations?

Those 2 are really high on my list, the Salomon SPEEDCROSS 6 GORE-TEX and Hoka Speedgoat 6 GORE-TEX. But there's a third contender, Merrell Men's Agility Peak 5 GORE-TEX. All my options have gore-tex because it is always wet and muddy across the routes I do - especially through this time of year.
