What Ethereum conference has the most apps? Why are we not building more apps? We already have sub-cent transactions, why do we need to focus on infra right now? I feel like I’m slowly going insane

In apps, 80%+ of the difficulty is in figuring out which apps actually make sense to build. I think this is why a generalized pitch of "we need apps" gets applause from pragmatist types but ultimately leads to no action - if our vision for the world is "WE WANT STUFF HAPPENING ON OUR CHAIN!", that's very uninspiring. Meanwhile, specific categories of apps are starting to do well! Lots of progress in zk identity and zk social, all kinds of interesting stuff in info finance. I think if we want more apps, a more definite-optimist approach where we talk about specific types of apps and what kind of world they will lead to will be much more effective.

Point taken, I agree the "where are the apps" is a nice social media post that isn't necessarily helpful (guilty). One of my big frustrations is that as a builder / user I don't even know where to look for some of these things you mention. One reason I think we have made so much progress with respect to infra is that new ideas are constantly being evaluated and iterated on by a critical mass of engineers. I would love to have a place where the real-world-usage maxis can get together and share ideas that don't have to do with leverage or financial speculation

Good thing for apps that things are getting increasingly easier to build. Less manual integrations, less needs for audits because there are other components you can use out of the box. I think though there are two key problems still to solve. The first one is that most documentations for lacking quality compared to trad tools. We need to help devs write better documentation. Bad docs => fewer things get build. And second we need to celebrate and push for smaller builds @superanon is a great example, smaller proof of concepts made in days, rather years. Smaller projects, shared wildly, less multi more single use case app but with a twist. I like the manifesto below. Product beats Whitepaper (at least we need a lot more of them) Build or watch it burn (we don't want to loose the edge) Make it matter (make things that make others feel something)

A lot of apps are already technically possible. Blockers are not on the technical side but on the cultural habits side, regulation side and political side. I don't mean illegal stuff like crime apps, but simply think about every day payment: in my country it's just a tax mess to have this, no one can reasonably pretend to be able to pay daily expenses with crypto. Think about apps for direct governance and using DAO like structure to manage non profit association: you can't, you have to stick to what form of government law allows (I only know about Wisconsin to allow DAOs). Buy a house, get married on chain? We have the tools, but no one would recognise that kind of proofs yet. Investment? Talk to my banker. Etc... We have the tools. We need the culture shift. A revolution in minds has to happen. I have no idea how it will happen and when, but it will. Just continue to have all the tools ready.

I'd like to see an app through which I could easily split the bill (privately) with others after a dinner or a drink. zkBob and Railway are a step in the right direction, but we need an even simpler UX and faster confirmation (zk proofs still take too long).

I kind of agree, but we should acknowledge that user activity is a strong measure of success, maybe it should be the strongest, stronger than TVL or Volume at least in nominal terms. I am obviously also very interested in eth increasing in its dollar value, but you can't claim you believe in the mission without getting all the end users on chain. That does not seem to be happening right now within the ecosystem.

Vitalik, it will be fascinating to see your wishlist of apps apps (for the masses) that you believe are now within reach, thanks to the evolving crypto primitives, things that you see now have enough tailwinds to help lift off? Think of it as a β€œcrypto-native” equivalent to YC’s yearly requests for startups :)
