I wonder what UN votes would look like if they were secret ballot. Each country chooses their representative, but from that point on it's up to each representative and their own conscience.

That’s an insane amount of power without any accountability to your constituents. Would strongly reject

Our organization is regularly speaking at the UN and it’s amazing the huge amount of behind the scenes work that’s involved in just lobbying governments to listen when something big is happening - So much persistence & noise! With the secret ballot point - We only wish! It’s very difficult to stomach right now.

Why would the US ever allow the UN to have some kind of actual power ?

The UN is such a joke anyways it would *almost* be fun just to watch the nonsense that would ensue.

Its a good question. I’m doubtful at least for America. Our government is keen on empowering people without a conscience

even more interesting if the representative kept their ballot secret from their constituents.

I suspect you’d also have to have the final tally be secret if you wanted to make it a conscience-only result

this is why rigorous debate is critical in representative systems people should have the opportunity to assess how their elected leaders think because it’s impossible to know the kinds of decisions they’ll face in a rapidly changing world esp true for US Senators who serve 6 year terms

Defeats the point of preventing countries from going to war with each other if the delegate doesn't represent the country

fascinating reflection! ...could imagine a general bias towards being corrupted. i.e. fewer cases of a conscientious person voting against his evil country wishes vs a corrupted person voting against his decent country wishes.

Then it would just be who wants to accept the most cash from China. Probably not too different to today. 🤷

That’s a terrible idea man. Delegates need to be accountable and immediately recallable if they are faithless. Check out Democratic Confederalism and Abdullah Ocalan.

I looked into this — UN has 3 vote types: - Recorded (individual votes noted) - Summary (totals without individual votes) - Secret Ballot (for elections, votes kept confidential) Seems like: Decision impacting public = public vote Decision impacting assembly = private 🤷
