"Unlike the pronatalists, who want to solve depopulation problems by bringing in entire new demographic cohorts of people, who are likely to have radically different values from us, on a mass scale, I'd rather we preserve our culture and focus on keeping alive and healthy the people we already have."

So this is an ironic twist on the stock anti-immigrant argument to make a life-extension argument instead. Do you actually believe it though? Ofc living longer is good, but are you opposed to natalism & having more kids?

"open culture" would vampire attack "closed culture" in the face of depopulation...

Fun twist. Although, in practice, it seems shockingly hard to fashion ourselves into radically different people than our parents. Peel away layers of abstraction, nature expresses itself.

underlying assumption here is that there is no globally shared value among all ppl from different demography...which I tend to disagree. Ppl of same social-economy class regardless of demography shares more common values than ppl from different social-economy class but same demography.

Our brains are optimized for the world we grow up in, so new brains are always going to be more fit than older generations. I'm all for extreme longevity, but if we're not actively illuminating our universe with brilliant new minds, what are we even doing here as a species?

keep humanity from fading with the same provably effective strategy we've used for thousands of years or bet the species on unproven life extension tech pretty clear choice

Whos quote is this? Out of context this seems like a false dichotomy. If the goal is to preserve life, the whole lifecycle needs preserving. Life is about change, not ANY change, but not just preservation either.

Add enough scale and time, and cultural preservation disappears. But as a side note related to this, I'll say it right now: effective altruism is 100% an exploitation scam that seeks to use hypothetical future justifications for executing actual in-the-moment exploitation.

I’m guessing this post only really applies to breakthroughs in life extension, since immigration is the only feasible solution to depopulation right now
