This is one of the historically common justifications of sports - that it's an opportunity for pure tribalism and craziness and entertainment that acts as an outlet for those energies, draining them away from pursuits where they might do more damage if they interfere. The challenge of course is that this is unstable: enough people are inherently more interested in things that "actually matter"

Yes and sports can go beyond an outlet and become a public good. Eg, teaching the civics of good sportsmanship, gracefully conceding losses and graciously accepting wins, opting into the authority of the referees, reinforcing meritocratic principles where hard work results in more victories…

It’s always frustrated me that the amount spent on a single Super Bowl ~ 17 billion https://www.finder.com/banking/super-bowl-spending-statistics could be used for so many worthy causes like housing the unhoused, mentor programs, or regenerative purposes.

Although sports are clothed in the Olympic spirit, they are essentially commercial activities, like a sugar-coated projectile. But going back to the source, there's nothing bad about business behavior, and everything in the world depends on business behavior, right

That’s true, but sports still provide a valuable outlet for emotions and a sense of community, which can help balance our engagement with more serious issues."

Do you value that “outlet” narrative? Seems more like exercising tribalism, as opposed to exorcising.
