https://twitter.com/pronounced_kyle/status/1734455620378796417 Here is an issue where I actually feel like siding with the SV techbro overlords a bit. The issue is that many of these statements are totally fine in the "rest of the world" .... once you remember that "rest of the world" is not "Anglosphere + Europe"

"don't tell kids to follow their dreams if their dreams are stupid" - would poll very well with non-WEIRD conservative parents pretty much anywhere criticism of universities - the broader message of "universities should focus on learning, not politics" is similarly popular

Elon Musk's high-conflict style.... ok fine that's a much more culturally specific thing. Though even still... it's amazing how many are defending advertisers here, the internet vibe of 5 years ago would clearly tell you that sticking the middle finger at ultra-powerful corporations is virtuous!

The point of dreams isn't the dream but the energy it generates. Follow your dreams means fucking follow them. The level of discipline it takes to achieve any of those dreams is significant. It's easier to steer a moving ship than a stationary one. If something moves you enough to call it a dream then fcking go for it.

I can’t say I disagree with either of those. With the “dreams” part, I guess it depends what criteria “stupid” is defined with. There’s a difference between a “stupid” dream and a “hard to obtain or almost impossible” dream.

Parents should tell their kids their dreams are stupid right around the same time they tell them santa isn't real. "Know how Santa's just a fanciful tale? Well, so is playing in the NBA."

The second statement would find overwhelming support in Europe. The first one would possibly split people more, but I still think it would be supported by most.
