What are people's definitions of an "L3"? Particularly, is it an architectural classification (whether or not there's some kind of intermediary between it and L1), or a security classification (can the attacker steal? can they freeze funds? can they steal/freeze but only at high cost?)

I assume it sits above an L2 somehow

I like your old argument that it’s a kind of DSL/accelerator for specific vertical classes, not a leverage layer. Seems like the emerging autonomous worlds/dark forest infrastructure kinda fits the model for gaming. Though I think there may be a cache levels type argument to be made…they even use L1-3 terminology

I just imagined any scaling tech on top of an L2. So like a state channel on a rollup.

L3 I’ve thought would be proprietary. In a gaming context, a game would have its items on an L2 but if the game itself was on chain (like opminecraft) that would happen on a private chain optimized for the games requirements and would interact with the “public” L2 as needed. At least that’s the model I imagine

App-specific chain on L2s. I would assume, they will inherit pro/cons of L2 underneath and have their own consensus mechanism.

I assume on top of L2s, but I haven’t seen any example of it yet. I remember the Starkware team saying they would encourage L3s on top of Starknet, though.

I’ve only heard “L3” as an architectural classification - an intermediary between it and an L1 bridges on L2s are not commonly referred to as an “L3” but are scrutinized through a security classification I’m seeing/hearing terms like “superchains” and “supernets” increasingly more often

Not sure, but would be a great name for AppChains that run on L2s

My understanding is that L3 is to L2 as L2 is to L1.

I'd define L3s and beyond as further modular scaling solutions that leverage a layer inception-like approach to combat state bloat faced by a single rollup, and to unlock neat features like arbitrary message passing Source: https://taiko.xyz/docs/concepts/inception-layers

L3s settle to an L2. For example, Arbitrum Orbit chains settle to Arbitrum One. This allows for cheaper bridging, if a user withdraws from CEX to L2, then bridges to L3. Rather than withdraw to L1, then bridges to L2.

I think anything any construction that has some state and a consensus mechanism is a layer. To be an L2 to you have to follow L1, to be an L3 you have to follow L2. A proof aggregator might or might not have a consensus mechanism, depending on this it will either be a layer or not.

modularity of cosmos but with the security of ethereum that sentence was mainly to attract readers l3s give the possibility to use different da solutions that will help to get new use cases that require less security guarantees (e.g games / social) - we cant get with dapps that need to publish data on ethereum
