I don’t want to engage in divisive political commentary (at least on here) but I’m genuinely shocked at what happened in Syria. They just snapped their fingers and a regime that existed for five decades evaporated into thin air. Anything is possible!

Something about it seems strange, I can't quite place the feeling but it all feels a bit too sudden and almost convinient esp. for western powers Theres also the risk of a power vacuum followed by a salafi led power grab

It took HTS almost eight years of prep ground work, though — we only started seeing media reports late, when the fight was well on its way and there was a chance of a decisive victory against Assad. As for the salafi power grab — I’m afraid it’s already the case, HTS is technically a coalition of islamists rooted in salafi jihadism. I guess what’s left to see now is how far the prevailing faction within HTS decides to index on it

Isn't it a combination of Russia and Hezbollah¹ not having enough resources to prop the regime up? ¹ Ironically, thanks to Israel however much I hate what they're doing.
