Anytime I see memes like this I think “worst kind of authoritarian” The right to be incompetent at adulting is the right that underwrites everything else. Ironically, fetishizing competence at independence skills is the mark of the mindless conformist. There’s more than one way to survive meaningfully.

Memes like this typically signal deep fear of being dependent on people with significantly different values than you. The Heineken “specialization is for insects” quotes is one of the worst things. Also Heinlen turned basically fascist in middle age.

Would you feel differently if the post proposed that these skills should be offered (but not mandatory)? I agree that we have a right to be incompetent, but it seems like the gov has an interest in assisting those who would seek competence.
