Brits say “going on holiday” instead of “going on vacation” and it somehow sounds way more festive and healthy. What are we “vacating” anyway? The grind? There’s no positive element?

We’re vacating from whatever/whomever we’re informing about the vacation. We know employers and colleagues don’t care about our personal happiness.

I think Americans in office environments like to understate anything positive that happens outside their work - marriage, having kids, going on holidays. Fear of being found out as not working hard enough or something
