Gross but practical question: how do you keep your external keyboard / mouse clean? 

I've tried isopropyl wipes and it doesn't seem that effective.

I have the same keyboard at work and at home but the one at home feels 100x nicer since I use it so much less.

Is it a lost cause?

Keyboards are like leather shoes they need to be worn in. 

Over time the hair, skin flakes and food crumbs give your keys a nice soft response curve. 

Cleaning just destroys all the natural oils, and I don’t recommend it.

Also, unless you’re a filthy casual who spends less than 80 hours a week at your desk, after 6 months or so you should be able to gently shake your keyboard upside down over a tortilla bread, and get enough filling to make a nutritious burrito

Agree. Put your computer in the freezer once every 2 weeks to extend its life and sanitize it.

Mine's pretty dirty and I dislike cleaning it too much but some ppl keep telling me to clean it

and when that lovely, well worn keyboard breaks, even with a new one of the exact same model it is not the same

Since it's mostly lipids, use warm dish soap. Alcohol isn't very good as a solvent for grease.
