We’re considering adding "Block" to Warpcast. Trolly behavior has increased as the network has grown. Some users constantly pile onto people they dislike with quotes and replies. Mute was enough when FC was smaller, but users need better tools. If you're an FC dev, would you want to add block to your app?

Block is difficult to get right in a decentralized way. So the initial version will be a Warpcast level feature. If you block someone: 1. They can't quote cast or reply (using Warpcast) 2. They won't show up in your feed, search or notifications A user's blocklist will be made publicly available over an API so you can integrate it into your applications. If this is something you'd use, please DM me.

The initial version will also have a lot of limitations. For example: 1. The blocked user will be able to see your casts and profile. 2. If you have accepted a DC request, the conversation will still be open. If the feature ends up being used, we will improve it to solve these edge cases and try to make the data available on the protocol.

I don't like the idea of restricting quote casts. Replies, fine...but blocking procrasting breaks linkability and encourages people to do more screenshotting. It also restricts free speech on the platform: Someone spreading misinformation may block someone who quotetweets to correct the record. Not even Twitter blocks your ability to quotetweet in practice, you can always just copy & paste a link to a tweet even if you're blocked. Also this needs to interface with channels... Some channels may not want the ability to block replies. What if you cast in a channel and block the moderator? I feel the mod should have the ability to set the rules.

Primary challenge being privacy? Or storage cost of the new Message type. If it's privacy, maybe Block messages can be encrypted with the public key of the signer. That way only the signer App can check to see if someone is blocked. Although that prevents it from being a user-global list. Or can encrypt with the users' public key. Then it's a global list and users have to allow apps access to their block list one time or whenever they make changes to their list AND change apps. I'm sure there's a workable scheme here somewhere...

Why disallow to quote someone’s cast? If French president was on Farcaster and he blocks me I still want to reference and comment their casts to my audience.

There is no perfect answer but putting this on the debate scale of decentralized or not, just doesn't make sense on a platform with owners and no DAO voting token. The centralized part of this is that you, the central authority of the app are adding the feature. Never in the history of the internet has someone complained about a block button unless they were a stalker. An onchain API of a blocklist, is more in the territory of stalker behavior. As it's providing people with a merkle tree of their enemies.

Why would you not want to have this feature? Seems like a no brainer with the monetization of engagement.

I like it. I can block all the bots that still show up above all the “show more replies” Can’t wait to make a frame for people to check if someone blocked their ass 😂
