Excellent description of the reality of humanity, modern or historical. I've long felt that "society" is just the practice of behavioral economics. Instinctually, humans are all flawed, selfish creatures that are capable of being more than the sum of their parts when properly constrained. We established the social agreement to define what constitutes pro-social behavior to bring out the best of humanity. Joan nailed it when pointing out the impact of scale and how it can exacerbate our best and worst traits. If we aren't building with this understanding in mind, we deserve to live in the hell we create for each other.

Spot on! We design checks and balances as we evolve and mature as a social species. When new technology brings a sudden jump in scale those mechanisms often break, we need to build new ones. This is not a simple task, as the systems we are embedded in are complex.
