ppl like this take but i disagree if you limit yourself to things that could fit on a survey (e.g. "do you own crypto?", "how do you feel about fusion?"), then it feels true. but thats a tiny part of your life. for bigger real-world things (where your food comes from, where your kids go to school, local politics, air/noise pollution, cost of living), you're much closer to your irl neighbors why does it feel true? cuz we've forgotten how to have quality relationships with neighbors. it's not anyone's fault -- the social tech is missing/outdated -- but its everyone's problem. imagine dan & co spent 3 focused years growing the qDAU of your block's social network. imagine you interacted with neighbors as much as you do with anons on FC. you might feel differently

Nextdoor tried to focus on qDAU of neighborhood blocks but ended up creating a social network where nimbys whine about everything up to trash cans not being brought away from the curb five minutes after pickup, door to door canvassers are alleged of crimes for having the audacity to knock on their door in broad daylight, and yimbys make fun of everyone else

just made a nextdoor account and played with it for 10 min. doesnt seem very social to me. mostly prompts to sync my contacts and invite my friends, not build strong social ties with ppl who live nearby wonder what led them astray

Nextdoor is stronger than you can imagine . From coordinating political movements to getting rid of items for free, job search to neighborhood watch, the community is (well both places I have lived) always buzzing. I call it Anger Station. There’s always someone with a rant that “everyone” is able to relate to their post
