So — in many ways you can be quite skilled and very knowledgeable in one arena, and have little to if not absolute deficiency in another area. People also assume that as you become more successful that you are quite balanced in many arenas, and I think this is absolutely not the case

One of the hallmarks of people that “I find to be cool” (solely opinion is my own) is this ability to transverse different domains, in a generally unpredictable (or unexpected) often because they follow their interests and these different facets of themselves are expressed without judgement across different domains

Corollary: A really interesting point that Plato has Socrates make is that people who excel at one thing (eg, money-making) often believe that they therefore excel at all things (eg, philosophy). It is in reaction to the “mud” that such people spatter on philosophy that Socrates, for the only time, becomes angry.

this also works for observers - holding people in higher regard for their new ventures because they excel in a previous one (i do it all too often)
