So — in many ways you can be quite skilled and very knowledgeable in one arena, and have little to if not absolute deficiency in another area. People also assume that as you become more successful that you are quite balanced in many arenas, and I think this is absolutely not the case

One of the hallmarks of people that “I find to be cool” (solely opinion is my own) is this ability to transverse different domains, in a generally unpredictable (or unexpected) often because they follow their interests and these different facets of themselves are expressed without judgement across different domains

In many ways what’s really cool is that they follow their interests regardless of what is in vogue or what others say and I think that’s pretty cool - often these different interest lead them to different paths So, these unexpected domains and plateaus that would not have existed had they not followed and connected two areas of their interests that would otherwise never had any cross pollination

Corollary: A really interesting point that Plato has Socrates make is that people who excel at one thing (eg, money-making) often believe that they therefore excel at all things (eg, philosophy). It is in reaction to the “mud” that such people spatter on philosophy that Socrates, for the only time, becomes angry.
