I live in a small zoo. Not literally, but kinda. I never wanted to have this many animals, but I married a kind and compassionate woman that will care for any living creature that needs it. I used to fight, I used to refuse, not wanting all the added responsibility, but unfortunately, I have a weakness. One that I cannot overcome. If I feed an animal, I instantly feel responsible for it. Why? Because food = love. I call this my inner immigrant grandma. I constantly need everyone to eat and once they do then its love at first bite 😂 I was just raised this way. My mother could cook literally anything, epically, famously, and no matter how long she had been working or how tired she was, her first question was always "are you hungry?" So, while she wasn't the type to gush with big emotional professions of love and affection, I always felt cared for in her kitchen. Everyone did. Now, I do all the cooking for my own family, because I want them to feel just how much love can go into a dish, just like I did.

If I hadn't had a kid then I would have ended up with a small zoo, myself! But, tbh, a kid plus an umbrella cockatoo plus a couple of dogs as our "main" pets for most of my kid's life was already a lot. During his time at home we had several fish tanks and a 3rd cockatiel on top of that, and with our empty nest we have 4 dogs and the cockatoo which is actually about my capacity. But I can easily see myself with a large aviary of all kinds of small parrots, or maybe on a small farm with chickens and goats and a bunch of dogs if I had not had a family!

i miss my umbrella cockatoos so much!!! they were so brilliant — the big one that let me throw him around like a football was looney! haha omg. and I had a sulfur crested cockatoo as well! i too would have had a ranch w rescue horses & rescue dogs — probably a zootelle for reptiles since no animal was turned away from me — ever :) and don’t forget the exotics! but @justbuild i love this — and i think my husband would agree w you re your food rule — you feed the animal, you are responsible for it! I never really thought of it that way, but I like it! this was my grandmother — she could cook anything and he first question was always “are ya hungry?!”
