Hmmm… I shoot with a Nikon, but I know when I was getting started with a DSLR back in 2008/2009, multiple pro friends recommended that I get a “superzoom” which was the 18-200mm VRII at the time, and I later got an 18-300mm VRII.
The idea is twofold… it reduces the wear and tear on your body from swapping lenses, and covers a wide range of conditions from the wide angle to the 200mm zoom. Canon definitely has a similar lens, and I think they run about $1k.
Pretty much, once you put it on the camera, you don’t need to take if off until you upgrade the camera.
I still carry it in my bag today, mounted to my second body so whatever I am shooting with my primary camera, I can quickly grab that if the conditions need the opposite: a rainbow over a mother and pup while I’m using a 200-500mm lens, or jump to 300mm if a monk seal pops its head up while I’m shooting a wide angle of a beach. 1 reply
